Description

In this class Dennis Cokely focuses on illustrating the impact of assumptions—often faulty—that individuals bring to communication events and how interpretations can either reinforce faulty assumptions or challenge faulty assumptions based on how message meaning is conveyed. When faulty assumptions were challenged through culturally-sensitive and meaning-based interpretation of comments from Deaf individuals to hearing individuals, the possibility of changing a hearing person’s understanding of Deaf people and the lived experiences of Deaf people can occur.  This requires interpreters to connect to their own experience of being uninformed prior to learning about Deaf people and structuring their interpretations of remarks from Deaf people to hearing people in a way that acknowledges and reflects the difference between being uninformed versus informed about Deaf life and the Deaf World.
