Perception Conflicts: The Role of Sign Language Interpreters in Court

This presentation examines the perspective of court interpreters from the point of view of the court and the attorneys. Through anecdotal narratives collected over the course of a 30 year career as a court interpreters, as an attorney, and as a legal interpreter educator, the presentation will focus on key misunderstandings that courts hold of interpreters and that interpreters hold of themselves. The presentation will encourage participants to widen their lens in terms of how they are perceived by courts and attorneys and deliberate whether new strategies can be incorporated to resolve these perception conflicts.
